UK DIY Solar Legislation and Compliance Status (2026)

This page separates legal/compliance detail from the main sales page so households can review requirements clearly before buying equipment.

Current Position (as of 12 April 2026)

  • Government announced a plug-in solar pathway focused on sub-800W systems.
  • There is no equivalent announced plug-in legislation for above-800W classes.
  • For larger systems, use existing non-plug-in connection routes and installer-led compliance workflows.

Compliance Matrix

Topic Sub-800W Plug-In DIY Larger Hard-Wired Systems
Primary route Planned plug-in pathway via updated rules Existing G98/G99 connection frameworks
DNO involvement No full prior-approval path expected, but DNO notification/registration remains important Process depends on connection class and aggregate capacity
SEG/export economics Assume zero export income for financial modelling unless eligibility confirmed Usually relies on certification/supplier criteria
With existing rooftop PV Possible if integration is properly engineered Aggregate generation/protection settings must be coordinated

Practical Rule Checks

  • Use certified, type-tested hardware and follow manufacturer installation instructions.
  • For hard-wired systems, account for electrician and notifiable-work compliance requirements.
  • Common planning checks cited in guidance include pitched-roof protrusion limits, flat-roof height limits, and garden array distance/size constraints.
  • Always verify latest DNO, BS 7671 and local planning position before installation.
